Resolution passed at CLP GC meeting on 27th Feb 2020
West Ham CLP expresses its grave concern at the sudden suspension of our comrade Mehmood Mirza from membership of the Labour Party. We consider this decision unjustified and wish to place on record our appreciation of Mehmood’s dedicated work over several years campaigning tirelessly for Labour.
We are especially alarmed at the sudden announcement of this arbitrary administrative decision right on the eve of the nationwide ballot for the vacant BAME place on the National Executive Committee. We note that Mehmood had gained 75 nominations from CLPs throughout the country – more than any other candidate for this position.
His suspension therefore represents a blow not only to members of West Ham CLP, which values his services locally, but also to Labour activists nationally, especially those from minority ethnic communities who had thus demonstrated their confidence in Mehmood’s ability to represent their interests.
We are confident that Mehmood will be completely vindicated by any fair process of investigation. We note with added concern that other candidates for the NEC have also been suspended on the very eve of the ballot, thus depriving the membership of the right to freely choose their representatives on the NEC. That being so, in the interests of transparent democracy, we urge the Labour Party to postpone the ballot for the vacant NEC positions immediately pending a resolution of these cases.
