Congratulations to Keir Starmer, the new Leader of the Labour Party, and Angela Rayner, our new Deputy Leader.
Keir and Angela won with 56.2% and 52.6% of the vote respectively – the full results are on our website. I am really looking forward to working with them – in the challenging circumstances we find ourselves in as we continue to deal with the coronavirus crisis, and in the years ahead.
I want to pay tribute to all the candidates for their well-fought and comradely campaigns. This election has allowed us debate to our ideas and I am proud of how we have involved all parts of our wonderful movement.
As the chair of our NEC Andi Fox said when she informed the candidates of the results: “I know you will both work tirelessly for our Party and our movement, as you have always done. This is a difficult time for our country and Labour has an important role to play to ensure our communities and our public services get all the help and support they need. I know you’re up to that task and I look forward to working with you both.”
I also want to give my personal thanks to Jeremy Corbyn for his leadership over the last five years. Jeremy has done so much to inspire a fresh generation of Labour members and activists, and this will be crucial to us as we rebuild. Thank you Jeremy.
We are and will remain a strong Opposition to the government. At the moment we are offering critical and constructive support to help the country get through the current crisis, ensuring we fully hold ministers to account on issues such as proper help, resources and equipment for our NHS, carers and other public services, and on financial support to enable people to stay at home without being forced to choose between their health and hardship.
Thank you all for everything you’re doing during these difficult times. I hope you are looking after yourself and others as best you can. Please use our website, which has a dedicated section on the coronavirus, including resources, top tips and helpline contacts.
For now, I know you will join me in congratulating and welcoming Keir and Angela – our new leadership team.
Solidarity and stay safe.
